Abstract

Greek mythology,as an important source of western culture, plays a noticeable role in the establishment of the value system of the west. This paper aims to interpret individualism, the core value of the western civilization, which was embodied in the Greek myths stories. It draws that the seeds of individualism can be found in Greek myths stories in mainly aspects:contempt for authority, admiration for the freedom of personal will and the development of personality, and consciousness of the importance of individuals. This paper also discusses the relative modes of thinking and ways of act in the western culture. The paper concludes that it is necessary to inform the college English learners of the source of individualism in Greek myths,so that they can better understand the western values and ways of act,and make cross-cultural communications successfully.
