Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Computer vision syndrome is a collection of symptoms related to prolonged work at a computer screen. The increased use of digital screens has brought about the development of a number of vision related issues. Individuals who work at a computer report many job related complaints and symptoms including, eyestrain, dry eye, headaches, accommodation problems, tired eyes, double vision and irritation. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the different symptoms that occur due to prolonged computer use and the preventive strategies used. METHODOLOGY: This was a descriptive cross sectional study conducted among medical students of different medical colleges of Peshawar. All medical students from different medical colleges of Peshawar, who use computer, mobile phone, and laptops, etc. for at least 3 hours daily, were included in the study. SPSS software version 20.0 was used for analysis. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 20 years. Total of 66.7% said they were experiencing vison related symptoms whereas 68.4% of the participants reported to have experienced headaches with computer use. About 47.8% complained to have had burning, itchy or red eyes because of regular computer use (F>M). Maximum students that is 256 (56.9%) reported to get relief from symptoms by taking regular breaks from computer usage. CONCLUSION: The most common computer use related symptoms experienced by students include headache, burning and itchy red eyes and blurred vision. Female students were more likely to experience computer related symptoms than male students. The best prevention strategy reported by the students to work is taking regular breaks from computer use
