Understanding Parenting and Parenting Style Education

Abstract

Parenting is the phenomenon of rearing children to attain development through stages. Parenting style is a personalized way of parenting. There are various factors influencing the parenting styles. Parenting styles are characterized by the presence and absence of certain specific patterns and dimensions of parenting.The concept of competent parenting has been immensely researched and emerged with valuable implications The concept has also invited discussion and debates pertaing to its conceptualisation. In the present article, the author has made an attempt to discuss the concept of parenting, parenting style and competent parenting. Characteristic features of Authoritative, Authoritarian Permissive and Neglectful parenting styles and factors affecting parenting style has been highlighted. Also, an attempt has been made to elucidate a definition of competent parent and competent parenting style.
