Diagnosis and management of depression in adolescents

This work reviews the diagnosis and management of depression in adolescents, drawing on available evidence and recommendations from international guidelines, as outlined in Box 1.

Abstract

CMAJ | May 29, 2023 | Volume 195 | Issue 21 E739 Depression is common, a leading cause of disability and a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease.1 Although more than 40% of people with depression experience onset before adulthood, depression remains undetected in many ado­ lescents in Canada, and most are untreated.2–4 Clinicians consist­ ently report a lack of confidence in their ability to care for adoles­ cents with depression.5 We review the diagnosis and management of depression in adolescents, drawing on available evidence and recommendations from international guidelines, as outlined in Box 1.
