Abstract

In a discussion of the epidemiology of oral cancer, the geographic distribution of the disease will inevitably be introduced. It is well known that certain types of cancer occur at very high rates in certain regions; for example, cancer of the liver is frequent in parts of Africa but extremely rare in America and Europe; nasopharyngeal carcinoma is much more frequent among the Chinese than among other peoples. Oral cancer also shows some interesting geographic features, the study of which is providing us with data useful for planning practical preventive measures.
