Abstract
This "Dutch initiative in mythology," as the editor calls it in the preface, has mobilized not only two Dutchmen, but also scholars from England, Switzerland, the United States, and Italy-in fact, some of the best specialists in the field, most of whom, by the way, are in their early forties (only W. Burkert and H. S. Versnel were born before 1942). Most of the themes chosen by the contributors are "classical" ones, and it is important to see them treated once more, in a new, and often in a convincing, perspective. Here I shall devote some space to a discussion of the single contributions; then I shall deal very shortly with a trait that is common to various essays, and lends unity to a volume that aims only at being original, meaningful, and
