Abstract

This paper is to probe into the thematic issue of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men which is most often read as one of his most pessimistic works. It points out that with the impact of the great depression, the dream of George and Lennie, the protagonists, or maybe any characters else of the book, though perished eventually, represents a strong desire to break the pattern of wandering and loneliness imposed on the casual workers and symbolizes a deep mutual commitment. The major theme of this work is,therefore, that men fear loneliness, and that they crave for others' understanding and companionship.
