The study of inpatient with schizophenia and outpatient with schizophrenia cognitive function comparison
The study suggests that long-term stay in hospital causes people with schizophenia partially reducing cognitive activities and regression and shows that patients may improve their life quality, reduce the damage of cognitive function through increasing social contact and taking regular clinical treatment.
Abstract
Objective:Aims To investigate the cognitive function difference between long-term(more than 5 years) inpatient with schizophenia and outpatient with schizophenia(being ai scharged after short-term hospitalisation,take-home medication,keeping clinical test regularly,and total inptient time less than 5 years).Methods:The 110 inpatients were chosen from people who been hospitalised in Harbin Puning Hospital for over five years in the duration of January 2000 to December 2009;the outpatient were chosen from people who currently visit the clinc regularly(being aischarged after short-term hospitalisation,take-home medication,keeping clinical test regularly,and total inptient time less than 5 years) as control group.Results: The comparison of the two groups were analysed in terms of intellectual functioning memory,attention,performance functioning with following tests-WAIS-RC,WMS-R(new edition),Stoop Test,Trail Making Test(TMT),HANOI Tower,M-WCST(new edition).Results The study shows significant difference,in terms of intellectual functioning memory,attention,performance functioning,between long-term inptatient group and control group with following tests——WAIS-RC,WMS-R(new edition),Stoop Test,Trail Making Test(TMT),HANOI Tower,M-WCST(new edition)(P0.01).Conclusions: Long-term inpatients with schizophenia shown more cognitive impairment than non-hospitalised patients or outpatient with short-term stay in hospital.The study suggests that long-term stay in hospital causes people with schizophenia partially reducing cognitive activities and regression.The research shows that patients may improve their life quality,reduce the damage of cognitive function through increasing social contact and taking regular clinical treatment.
