The article focuses on the tragic fate of genetics in the Soviet Union during Staline's regime and on efforts of the Institute's founder – academician Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov and his followers to promote an international level genetic studies within the Institute.
The article presents the origin, institutional and scientific development, structure and staff of the Vavilov Institute of General Genetics, the Russian Academy of Sciences. It focuses on the tragic fate of genetics in the Soviet Union during Staline's regime and on efforts of the Institute's founder – academician Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov (1887–1943) and his followers to promote an international level genetic studies within the Institute.
