Although paracoccidioidomycosis affects lungs primarily, it is often diagnosed through oral manifestation, so it is important to pay attention to chronic ulcerated lesions of oral mucosa, considering the possible diagnosis of this disease.
Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this work was to present a literature review about paracoccidioidomycosis, focusing important clinical aspects of this disease. Data source: Articles indexed on Medline and scientific books, both published from 1990 to 2004, were reviewed. Data synthesis: Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic disease, with endemic profile, caused by the dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. The primary way of infection is pulmonary, by the inhalation of fungus spores or particles. Several anatomic sites can be involved by lymphohematogenic dissemination to other organs and systems, including oral mucosa. Conclusion: Although paracoccidioidomycosis affects lungs primarily, it is often diagnosed through oral manifestation. It is important to pay attention to chronic ulcerated lesions of oral mucosa, considering the possible diagnosis of this disease.
