Abstract

Since the early 1990s the Russian Federation has been trying to become a part of the Western educational system based on the liberal paradigm, and as a result it has abandoned its crucial function, that of teaching pupils civic and national values. Amid the unfolding information war against Russia, it has become clear that schools and universities need to take up this mission to inculcate the values of patriotism, civic duty, responsibility for the destiny of the country. Schools of tertiary education play a special role in shaping a critically minded person who upholds traditional national values. Teachers of foreign languages are at the forefront of the ideological confrontation as teaching a foreign language at an advanced level is closely linked with the analysis and evaluation of texts that often have a biased perspective on international developments, particularly on Russia’s policy. Therefore, a premium must be placed on the methodology of teaching, selecting appropriate materials in order for students to develop a critical approach to working with information.
