Abstract

This entry provides a brief overview of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The following components are covered: first, a brief history of the disorder since the late nineteenth century; second, a breakdown of the epidemiology of ADHD; third, a discussion of the neurological, psychodynamic, allergenic, and sociological etiologies of the disorder; fourth, a discussion of the prevalent treatment approaches to ADHD; and finally, an explanation of ADHD through a “medicalization” framework.
