Abstract
In this paper we introduce the concept of "research preparatory" projects. We have begun to include these open-ended projects in our existing undergraduate curriculum to improve our student's ability to reason analytically; design experiments to test their assumptions and to evaluate their solutions; and to communicate effectively. We describe the research preparatory projects in two of our courses and our initial experiences in the classroom.
