Fiber Optics has revolutionised the communication industry as the most attractive and viable transmission medium for wideband telecommunication, data transmission and information transfer and there has been an explosive growth and emergence of many newer applications and potentials of this already established technology.

Abstract

In recent years, Fibre Optics has revolutionised the communication industry as the most attractive and viable transmission medium for wideband telecommunication, data transmission and information transfer. This is due to the fact that optical frequencies(~1015 Hz) are several orders of magnitude higher than the frequencies associated with radio waves (~106 Hz) and microwaves (~1010 Hz) and as such a light beam acting as a carrier wave is capable of carrying far more information in comparison to radio waves and microwaves. The area of fibre optics is one of the major thrust areas in India and quite a few optical communication systems are already in operation in the country. Indeed, two public sector companies will also be shortly rolling out indigeneously manufactured communication grade optical fibers.In recent years, there has been an explosive growth and emergence of many newer applications and potentials of this already established technology.
