Abstract

An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) aims two detect two types of attacks with equal efficiency. First, the attacks from external, third party hackers. Second, intrusions arising internally due to trusted members misusing and abusing their privileges. An IDS is based upon the principle that the illegitimate actions of an intruder is always noticeably different from the legal actions of an authorized personnel. To derive best benefits of an IDS, it has to be implemented in conjunction with other existing security technologies. This paper underscores in detail the IDS, its need, goals, the detection techniques used by it, its types and its real-time functioning.
