The advantages and disadvantages of mandatory reporting of domestic violence are presented and alternatives that improve the response to domestic violence in the healthcare setting are suggested.
Abstract
ABSTRACT Domestic violence, a serious health problem, affects millions of people every year. Healthcare providers are in a unique position to identify and provide intervention in such cases. Unfortunately, providers under diagnose victims of domestic violence. Thus, some states have mandated reporting of domestic violence. This article presents the advantages and disadvantages of mandatory reporting and suggests alternatives that improve the response to domestic violence in the healthcare setting.
