This proposal describes a preliminary outline of a current work-in-progress, exploring the concept of the youth user in the field of user experience design and the perception of the youth user and associated application of the concept among user experience design professionals. Of particular interest to this project is the area of social media design, for the purposes of discussing its potential use in establishing social support for youth technology users. Through a thorough analysis of an available body of literature in design studies and adjacent fields, conceptualizations of the user will be identified. Following this stage, willing staff members of 4 separate design and technology firms will be interviewed in a semi-structural fashion to assess the concept of the user in practice. This project has the potential to inform areas of design studies and human-computer interaction, especially regarding the increasing need to incorporate and serve diverse individuals and communities.
