Abstract

The problem addressed by Johannesson and Steendam is whether the use of M-Pesa was an effective strategy for reducing corruption in Kenya. To obtain results, several estimates were made with data obtained through a questionnaire addressed to people residing in Nairobi. This questionnaire aimed to know the frequency, usage, habits of mobile banking services and how citizens live corruption. It was concluded that since no one wants to fight against corruption or take responsibility, control measures and anti-corruption efforts will not be effective, leading to the failure of M-Pesa's anti-corruption strategy. In addition, it was found that the people that answered to the public-sector questionnaire and that used M-Pesa had a negative impact on the corruption rate in terms of reducing corruption, a sign that improving the governance structure in Kenya leads to less corruption. It has also been found that the negative correlation between M-Pesa and corruption is insignificant and that there is no certainty about the existence of a strong relationship between these two factors. Therefore, the authors of the study hope that to create certainties that the mobile financial bank reduces the harmful effect on corruption, there is support for a strong anticorruption policy at M-Pesa level.
