Abstract

Urbanization is rapidly transforming the world, bringing the challenges of escalating energy demand and environmental impact. Urban Solar Integration, the strategic incorporation of solar energy systems into urban planning and development, emerges as a vital solution to address these challenges. This review paper comprehensively examines the global landscape of Urban Solar Integration, drawing on case studies from diverse cities worldwide. It explores the multifaceted potential of solar energy in urban contexts, from mitigating greenhouse gas emissions to enhancing energy security and promoting economic growth. Technological innovations, policy developments, and evolving urban planning paradigms are discussed, along with persistent barriers and challenges. Through case studies, this paper highlights the versatility of solar solutions in addressing the unique needs of cities, showcasing innovative approaches from Berlin’s solar rooftop revolution to Nairobi’s off-grid empowerment initiatives. The paper concludes with recommendations for urban planners, policymakers, and stakeholders to advance the integration of solar energy into urban environments, fostering a sustainable, resilient, and equitable urban future.
