Abstract

Part of the large-scale works in the Calcutta area to relieve the critical water situation IN THIS paper the topic of &dquo;Economics of Health&dquo; will be approached from the special point of view of an international civil servant working with one of the United Nations family of agencies-the World Health Organization-whose member states have agreed to use the Organization as an agent to achieve improved physical, mental and social well-being for their people. The work of the Organization in relation to economics has three general aspects. First, W.H.O. itself needs international funds to give the advisory and supplementary services requested by the majority of its 124 member states; secondly, it advises individual governments to start and implement programmes and projects which may require small or large amounts of national or local funds and may have many direct or indirect financial and economic implications. Thirdly, W.H.O. is interested in the effects of other fields of economic and social development on health conditions.
