It is concluded that a new wave of hype is emerging round Web 2.0 whereas the reality is that successful current applications of e-learning have become more diverse and there is insufficient focus on the way that learning takes place in organisations.

Abstract

This paper considers the progress of e-learning and some factors that have shaped its implementation. It draws on extended research undertaken at the UK Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development over the period 2001-8 and therefore focuses on training and learning in corporate organisations rather than enrolled students in educational institutes. The paper argues that, throughout, there has been insufficient focus on the way that learning takes place in organisations. It concludes that a new wave of hype is emerging round Web 2.0 whereas the reality is that successful current applications of e-learning have become more diverse.
