Abstract

This case discusses an elderly woman who presents at an emergency department with relatively mild upper respiratory tract infection symptoms who is overdiagnosed and subjected to an invasive and unnecessary test, an error of commission. The biases of availability, affect, and familiarity are evident in the case, as well as attempts to reduce the likelihood that the decision maker will experience chagrin and anticipated regret in their decision making.
