Abstract

The third volume of this series under a change of editorship, maintains the policy of the earlier volumes of presenting reviews of value and interest to forensic scientists. In this volume toxicology is represented by chapters on lead poisoning, on the analysis of urine for the presence of drugs and on the toxicology of cyanides. In the first, apart from a review of analytical methods, the causes of plumbism and its hazards, treatment and control are covered. In the second, after advice on the collection and preservation of samples, a wide range of techniques is described for the detection and estimation of a number of drugs and narcotics that may be encountered in case-work. The treatment is based mainly on American practice and attention is directed to gaps in the analytical procedures in respect of certain potent drugs, such as cannabis sativa, which have yet to be bridged. Emphasis is laid on the value and speed of various techniques of paper chromatography in searching for the many drugs which nowadays may be encountered in urine. The section on cyanides covers the general fields of rapid testing, and classical analytical
