Abstract

Key electric vehicle (EV) communications can be read through the vehicle On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) system. While recording data from the vehicle OBD, a chassis dynamometer (dyno) testbed can be used to emulate various driving schedules/cycles. Analysis of this test data can provide engineers, technicians and researchers with significant insight into how the EV systems are operating in order to understand the performance. This paper characterizes EV chassis dyno testing, giving an overview of dyno operation and methods for obtaining vehicle performance. EVs are run through drive cycles on the dyno to demonstrate the OBD and dyno’s ability to accurately collect real time EV data. The experimental results will provide researchers insight into enabling improved operation of EVs in the field and contribute to determining fast charging approaches that have minimum negative effects on the battery health and vehicle performance.
