The safe use of nuclear power in any country rests also on the possibility of safely managing and disposing of all kinds of radioactive wastes and effluents that are generated during the operations of nuclear facilities. These problems have been recognized and studied since the early days of nuclear technology and considerable experience has been gained. However, issues of waste management have dome to the fore in recent years with the increasing role of nuclear power. Obviously, industrial development of nuclear power cannot proceed successfully without the assurance that safety requirements can be met today and in the future, and that waste disposal will not place an undue burden on future generations.
