Abstract

In this paper we describe the project management structures, challenges and crucial success factors of the GAL project, an interdisciplinary research project in Lower Saxony/Germany. After a brief introduction on the research topics, the organizational structures and management tools are described. We then discuss the project management challenges of physical distance, interdiscipli-narity, project controlling and lateral management that are typical for large-scale research networks.
