Abstract

In recent years a number of successful science-oriented television programs designed for the general public, such as Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" and David Attenborough's "Life on Earth," have spawned equally successful books. A general problem encountered in the transition from the screen to the printed word is that what is dynamic on television is often dull in a book. The Human Brain is a book based on seven documentary television programs produced by the BBC. Although the subject matter is interesting, it suffers in this format. The book is organized into seven chapters, each dealing with a specific topic such as memory, sight, language, emotion, and mental disease. Case histories are presented to illustrate various neurological entities such as stroke, blindness, fear, and schizophrenia. In addition, these case presentations serve as a stepping stone for the discussion of the chemistry, anatomy, and physiology of the brain. Individual researchers also comment on
