I T is proposed in this article to review recent research into the aetiology of ulcerative colitis, to describe its clinical features, differential diagnosis, prognosis, local and systemic complications and to omit the management of the condition which was recently described in an article in this Journal (Watkinson & de Dombal, 1968). The information recorded resulted from experience obtained in managing 465 patients with ulcerative colitis studied in Leeds between 1954 and 1967 at a combined medicosurgical colitis clinic and this experience has been recorded in greater detail elsewhere (Goligher et al., 1968).
