This chapter describes how to undertake a FAST and an extended FAST scan, with examples of common pathology, together with the limitations and pitfalls.
Abstract
Focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST) continues to have a role in the primary assessment of the seriously injured patient, despite the widespread availability of early computed tomography scanning. This chapter describes how to undertake a FAST and an extended FAST scan, with examples of common pathology. The benefits, together with the limitations and pitfalls, are outlined.
