35:438 El cine de Hugo Santiago / THE FILMS OF HUGO SANTIAGO edited by David Oubiña (Buenos Aires: Ediciones Nuevos Tiempos, 2002—price not available, ISBN 987-98391-3-7, 144 pp., notes, photos) is a collection of essays that accompanied a retrospective of the director’s films at the IV Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival. Born in Buenos Aires in 1939, Santiago began his career in Argentina but created the bulk of his work from the mid-1970s to the present. Still, he never ceased describing his work as that of a “Porteño (Buenos Aires native) away from home." The book includes 27 essays written by artists, critics, scholars, and the filmmaker himself. The essays are grouped into three main parts. Film according to Hugo Santiago includes nine essays, ranging in length from one to three pages, that function as notes to various films. The second part of the book, the films of Hugo Santiago, comprises the heart of the book with 10 essays by the invited artists, critics, and scholars who comment on general influences and styles, and specific films themselves. The final part of the book, film and Hugo Santiago, includes eight brief testimonies by writers, producers, and actors (including one entry by Argentina’s most famous writer, Jorge Luis Borges) reflecting on their experiences working with the director. Though brief, the articles on Santiago’s work are documented with scholarly and journalistic footnotes and reflect Argentina’s critical interest in psychoanalysis. Black and white photographs of film stills and the director at work complement the written text. The book also includes a helpful chronology of Santiago’s career, a filmography of his films, and a bibliography of work by and about him. (Robert Huesca)
