Abstract
Chapter 1 argues the basis of the book: that the category ‘battle’ is one that has not been subject to any systematic attempt to understand it as a phenomenon, and it therefore examines the place of battle in Western modes of thought. The chapter also sets out the distinction (so frequently elided) between the battle as event and the place where it took place. It looks at the kinds of places sought as battlefields at different periods of the past and at the idea of ‘the battle’ as conventionally understood in order to challenge that conventional understanding.
