Abstract

Twenty cases are described in which treatment has been by once-weekly out-patient psychotherapy for a maximum period of six months, the patient having been informed of the length of this fixed term from the start. The selection criteria are set out, the tech nique used is described, and the criteria for assessing therapeutic results defined. Some notions as to the probable mode of action are put forward, but no account is given of the actual course of treatment with any patient. The cases are briefly described in terms ofcomplaints, a view of their family background, any previoUS treatment, and the results at a follow-up obtained by means of a questionnaire. It is suggested that this technique or variations on it is a useful and productive form of brief psychotherapy.
