Abstract
When a computer is an integral part of a larger system, where it intensively interacts with the surrounding environment and frequently deals with real-time constraints, it is considered an embedded system. This communication describes the embedded system world: architecture, classification, characteristics, system limitations, and trends. It also discusses architectural features that cannot exist in hard real time control.
