Abstract Optimization techniques are widely used in many areas and frequently developments of a technique in one area open up opportunity for its use in other areas. This paper presents examples of how the newer techniques have contributed to the improvement in technological processes. After a brief discussion of optimization, available optimization techniques are classified and the principles of constraint and uncertainty programming outlined. The application of current techniques to design problems in various production disciplines are then discussed and the Appendix presents some problem solutions.
