Abstract

When planning a training course, one must consider both what to teach and how to teach it. New information and skills are best learned through a combination of information, examples, and practice. To truly learn clinical skills, however, practice is essential. For example, a teacher may use readings and lectures to impart information during which the student listens and/or reads. Students can see examples in film or video presentations, pictures or slides, clinical demonstrations, and written examples. At the student's most active level, students will practice what they have been taught in written exercises and case studies with individual feedback, group discussions, drills, role play, and practice in real work situations. Each of these teaching methods is briefly discussed.
