Abstract

[This is the revised version of the K R Narayanan lecture that I delivered in Canberra on June 1, 2012. At the time of the lecture, and up to July 31, I was the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India, Ministry of Finance. The final revisions in preparing the written version were made on 25 August, 2012. At the end of the lecture in Canberra there was a remarkably engaged discussion with the audience.
