Abstract

In the third section, the divergence of glycan structures among organisms is addressed with discussion of how model systems can be used to further an understanding of glycobiology. The fourth section presents the various families of glycan binding proteins and their biological roles are discussed. Recurring concepts in how these proteins recognize glycans are detailed and the approaches that can be used to identify their ligands are also provided. Readers are then plunged into a stimulating section that will interest those from a wide range of backgrounds. Some specialist readers from different areas (such as medicine) may prefer to enter Essentials of Glycobiology through this section, which details the physiological roles of various glycans and glycan-binding proteins. In the final section, the methods used in glycobiology are presented and these are capped by a discussion of existing and potential application of glycobiology. The second edition of Essentials of Glycobiology will be an essential resource for newcomers seeking to become conversant with the area of glycobiology. Experts will enjoy both the breadth of up-to-date information and tripping over the many gemstones scattered throughout. A valuable touch is that each chapter offers up a list of additional references that provide interested students with detailed readings on a specific topic. Although this edition gives a taste of the rapidly moving areas of plant and bacterial glycosylation, readers seeking details on these topics will be left wanting more. Despite this minor shortcoming, I recommend Essentials of Glycobiology without reserve for both experts and students.
