This paper investigates material selection using technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and their comparison with figure of merits (FOMs) for piezoelectric material selections for energy harvester, sensor and actuator applications.

Abstract

Material selection is the process of selecting the best material from a large pool of viable materials. Multiple attribute decision making (MADM) approaches are found to be efficient and effective in various scientific, technological and management fields. However, effectiveness of these techniques is not examined thoroughly in the area of material selection. This paper investigates material selection using technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and their comparison with figure of merits (FOMs). Piezoelectric material selections are studied for energy harvester, sensor and actuator applications. It is observed that TOPSIS results are in accordance with their FOMs.
