patient but to others in the household, particularly children who may get hold of the tablets inadvertently. A number of nonbarbiturate drugs are available of which one of the best is probably nitrazepam (Mogadon) which is related to chlordiazepoxide (Librium) and shares with that drug a relative immunity from toxic effects of overdose. No cases of death resulting from the ingestion of very large quantities of this drug have been reported. However, it is by no means free of hangover and the other disadvantages of barbiturates, and although it will suit a number of patients, it may prove ineffective in others. In this case, resort may be made to a barbiturate; it is probably better to use one of the milder ones such as butobarbitone (Soneryl), pentobarbitone sodium (Nembutal) or phenobarbitone.
