Abstract

Destruction mechanisms of 3p2, 3p6, 2p2 and 2p3 (Paschen notation) Ar I excited states are investigated in an argon glow discharge by means of a laser perturbation method. Total radiative transition probabilities (in good agreement with accepted values) and thermally averaged cross sections for de-excitation by collisions with ground-state atoms are deduced from measured quenching rates for different discharge conditions.
