Abstract
There were approximately 3.95 million orphans in South Africa in 2008. This figure includes children without a living biological mother, father or both parents, and is equivalent to 21 per cent of all children in South Africa. The number of children who have lost both a mother and father has more than doubled since 2002 - from approximately 350 000 to 860 000.
