Countless management training courses stress the importance of good, clear communication, but it seems that despite ubiquitous cell phones, tablets, e‐mail, and the whole social media universe, that good, clear communication ‐ so vital to effective management and leadership ‐ is often lacking. Why? In the paragraphs to follow, I proffer a couple of reasons this may be occurring, one relating to the communication medium and the other to the messaging itself. A third consideration is how the receiver “decodes” the message and whether he or she understands the intent or has a different takeaway f...

This is a report and analysis of the inter-managerial relations between the central office (hereafter Office) of a corporation and one of its units, as the managers of the Office imposed a control on those of the unit. The problem is twofold: first, to show the events leading to decisions, and second to follow the interplay between formal groups (representing official fiat) and informal groups (concerned with evading or modifying directives) from a given point to a working adjustment. The problem can best be presented by first tracing actions that led to intervention by the Office.
: Globally distributed IT projects are common practice in today’s globalized world. Typically, project team members work on interdependent tasks, with a common goal to be achieved as one team. However, being split between multiple locations impedes communication among team members and hampers the development of trust. Information and communications media enable communication between geographically distributed project team members and help to create and maintain trust within project units. Communication and trust are particularly significant for fostering a feeling of oneness among project team...

: Resource allocation is the process of assigning resources to tasks throughout the life of a project. Despite sophisticated software packages devoted to keeping track of tasks, resources and resource assignments, it is often the case that project managers find some resources over-allocated and therefore unable to complete the assigned work in the allotted amount of time. Most scheduling software has provisions for leveling resources, but the techniques for doing so simply add time to the schedule and may cause delays in tasks that are critical to the project in meeting deadlines. This paper p...

■ in all societies of any size and complexity, there must be persons who perform the managerial function. In earlier eras, this function was performed by those who by virtue of heredity, property rights, military prowess or priestly skill held positions of power. In contemporary times the development of managerial groups has gone beyond anything achieved by previous societies in relative numbers, power and privilege, and the degree of autonomy with respect to other social groups and classes. A more important development is a shift in the oasis of managerial power. The divorce of control, or po...
There is more to be lost through management's not doing its proper job than from encroachment from labor or government. When a manager abdicates his responsibilities, the result is a lack of balance in management style.

The word 'manage' has been defined as “to cause persons to submit to one's control”. Studies of both the operation of wage systems and of budgets show that these managerial controls are open to manipulation by employees. A study by the author described a situation in an engineering factory where the whole range of managerial controls were simultaneously manipulated. He concluded that all managerial controls could be manipulated by employees. The primacy of informal over formal organization has been demonstrated in a variety of institutional settings. The sources of power available to lower par...

The way organisations manage their managers is undergoing significant change. Despite this, it is a topic that has faced limited scholarly consideration. For decades, there was an evergrowing mountain of research on management that has moved our understanding forward, but much less attention has been paid to managers and less still to how they are themselves managed within organisations. This book attempts to fill this gap; it reviews the research conducted to date; and explores future research pathways. Our contribution is structured into 18 chapters; at the heart of each chapter is the notio...

One of the greatest difficulties Japanese multinationals have had is managing American managers in their US subsidiaries. The reason for this is fundamental and profound: Americans and Japanese conceive of management very differently and have strikingly different conceptions of themselves as managers and of correct management practice. We do two things in this paper. First, borrowing from social psychology, we explore the idea of the ‘management self’. Second, we report our research on management self‐conception and style in Japanese‐owned factories or ‘transplants’ in the USA. The research re...

As the first editor-in-chief of Management Science, I expressed my ambition for the society (TIMS) and its journal. My notion was that a society and journal in the subject of a science of management would investigate how humans can manage their affairs well. For me, “well” means “ethically,” or in the best interest of humanity in a world of filthy oppression and murder (I'm a philosopher and therefore have a philosophical bias, the same bias Plato had when he wrote the Republic). I find that 40 years later management scientists have been inventing all kinds of mathematical models and novelties...
