It was shown that the maintenance of hospitals had evolved into an indispensable kind of business in which there were three partners each possessing rights, namely, the patients for whose benefit the hospitals exist, the medical profession which supplies the skill by which those patients are treated, and those who-at present voluntarily-furnish the funds which render It possible for the other two partners to play their parts.

I believe individuals will do the work of investigation better than committees; in all cases the individual worker can secure the co-operation of some fellowworker, should the inquiry lead him into ground with which he is not familiar.
It has long been recognized that the treatment of gonorrhcea is far from satisfactory, and that, notwithstanding the introduction of a large number of vaunted remedies, no man can promise a cure in any given patient. The bankrupt state of our therapeutics is especially well shown in gynrecological practice, and many men of wide experience admit that the majority of cases of chronic gonorrhceal infections in the female are practically incurable. A few years ago there was much expectation from what was termed the abortive treatment. No one places any reliance now on the prospects of a cutting sh...

In the current era where environmental degradation is alarming, hospitality enterprises have picked up pace and put greater effort in finding practical solutions to the problem. In this regard, the main driver of environmental conservation is stakeholders’ support, especially that of clientele. However, effectiveness of ecological measures mainly depends on favourability of hotel guests’ perceptions towards the initiatives. Drawing on the Theory of Planned Behaviour, this study sought to establish the effect of eco-friendly perceptions on behaviour of guests in eco-rated camps at the Maasai Ma...

Commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) have emerged strong and have faced a generally positive credit environment since the last recession. As the market grew out of recession in the early 1990s, the primary focus remained on providing better and safer returns to investors. Tied in their lock box, a period that con-tractually prohibits the borrower from all prepayments, the borrowers kept holding tightly onto their loans. Currently, as the delinquency rate on loans has been on the rise

This paper analyzes the performance of five real estate sub-sectors (office, retail, industrial, apartment, and hotel) over a 10-year (historical) period, 1992 to 2001, to assess the impact the hotel sub-sector would have on investment performance when constructing a multi-property investment portfolio. The research was built on the foundation of modem portfolio theory, and data were analyzed using correlation analysis, Sharpe ratio, and a portfolio simulation model. Research results suggest that, at least during the study period, the hotel sub-sector outper-formed all other sub-sectors in ter...

The main objective of this study is to examine the performance of hotel stocks and lodging real estate investment trusts (REITs) by estimating the recent Fama-French five-factor model (including investment and profitability factors) with an additional momentum factor during the 2000– 2015 period. Using multifactor models, results show that lodging REITs underperform hotel stocks in the United States, while the opposite is true in Japan. Our findings indicate that the momentum factor is significant in explaining variation of lodging returns in both the United States and Japan. Smaller lodging f...

Franchising some and owning other outlets is considered a performance-enhancing strategy relative to owning all outlets. Few studies explored when franchising reduces firm performance, however. We fill this gap by using two moderators: brand diversification and geographic dispersion. Using a sample of restaurant firms for the 1997-2012, we find that brand diversification and geographic dispersion moderate the relationship between franchising and firm financial performance through a three-way interaction. In line with our predictions, for firms with high geographic dispersion, the influence of ...

This study investigates the impact of fear on stock returns of the lodging companies for two specific periods (from January 1997 to December 2007 and January 2008 to June 2018). While the literature has adequately studied the relationship for general stock returns, it has underemphasized a sector-based approach, including the lodging industry, toward understanding the connection. The study contributes to the literature by focusing on the short-term dynamic connection for the lodging firms and by providing theoretical propositions that could advance the theory building process. The results show...

. Hotel feasibility studies play an important role in the hotel development process as hotel developers, lenders, and operators all require an analysis of a hotel’s projected operating performance and the ensuing financial returns. Such studies are rarely effective, however, at predicting future performance. Although scholars and practitioners have repeatedly recommended numerous improvements to correct their methodological weaknesses and improve their accuracy, few changes have been incorporated. This study’s purpose was to identify the underlying reasons why the methodological improvements id...

This study presents an empirical insight into the relationship between return on equity (ROE), financial leverage and size of firms in the restaurant industry for the period 1998 to 2003 using OLS regressions. Research results suggest that at least during the test period firm size had a more dominant effect on ROE of restaurant firms than debt use, larger firms earning significantly higher equity returns. . Restaurant managers often do not have a comprehensive understanding of all of the costs involved in operating a successful restaurant, leading to inaccurate, and potentially unprofitable, menu item pricing. One trend in cost analysis is to explore techniques used in other industries, including activity-based costing. A body of work exploring the application of activity-based costing in the foodservice industry has gradually evolved. A review of previous research on activity-based costing in various restaurant segments validates it as a consequential approach that is capable of reducing waste,...

This paper explores the differences between the Russian and western accounting systems. As western hospitality companies enter the markets of the former Soviet Union this understanding will be imperative. Under the Soviet government the hospitality industry in Russia was very poorly developed. After the collapse of the U.S.S.R in 1991 many businesses in Russia including hotels and restaurants flourished but the accounting systems to support them remained antiquated or non existent. Unfortunately, the current Russian accounting system is still closely reflecting the Soviet accounting system. Ru...

Even though a general capital structure literature suggests an existence of an optimal leverage point, it is extremely difficult to know the exact optimal leverage point for an entire economy, an industry, or a firm if possible at all. Several studies in general finance and accounting literature have examined this particular issue and found some consensus that there are differences in optimal leverage ratio among different industries. However, the focus of those studies was not on the lodging industry and most studies did not include the lodging data for their analysis. Further, no exclusive c...
