1. Introduction

Affecting approximately 5–7% of children and 2–5% of adults worldwide, ADHD imposes substantial burdens, including impaired academic performance, strained family relationships, and increased risks of comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, and substance use. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified these challenges, with disruptions like remote learning and social isolation potentially exacerbating symptoms and prompting a surge in diagnoses. Traditional views of ADHD etiology emphasize genetic and neurobiological factors, such as dopamine dysregulation and prefrontal cortex inefficiencies, but emerging evidence points to environmental influences, including prenatal insults and post-infection neuroimmune changes, as modifiable contributors.

Diagnosis remains complex, relying on subjective behavioral assessments like DSM-5 criteria, which can lead to delays or misdiagnoses, particularly in underserved populations such as racial minorities or those in low-resource settings. Treatments encompass pharmacological options, primarily stimulants like methylphenidate, and non-pharmacological approaches, including behavioral parent training and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which target executive functioning and self-regulation. This review addresses the research question: "Latest Research on ADHD 2026: Causes, Diagnosis & Treatments," by integrating findings on etiological trends, diagnostic advancements, and multimodal interventions to inform evidence-based strategies for diverse populations.

2. Methods

2.1 Search Strategy

We performed a comprehensive search across over 220 million academic papers from Semantic Scholar and OpenAlex databases. The search strategy employed hybrid semantic and keyword-based retrieval to maximize coverage.

Search queries included:

2.2 Study Selection

Initial database searching identified 280 records. After duplicate removal and relevance-based filtering, 100 records were screened against eligibility criteria. Of these, 81 papers were excluded, resulting in 19 papers included in the final synthesis.

Data extraction focused on the following variables:

  • Methodology: Summarize the study type (e.g., RCT, cohort, meta-analysis, systematic review), main methods, and duration.
  • Implications & Limitations: Summarize the main clinical or research implications and note any major study limitations discussed.

Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns and synthesize findings across studies. Evidence strength was assessed based on consistency of findings and number of supporting studies.
