Abstract This article is a review of three low-cost mapping software packages now available for microcomputers. It compares them on ease of use, hardware supported, and availability of program features. The article also describes the elements of a mapping session: creating geographic boundaries, inputting and analyzing data, and preparing maps for display. Noting that these packages are developing in directions that will make them increasingly useful for planning practice, the author provides evaluation criteria and recommendations for potential users.
