Abstract
A spray reagent consisting of anisaldehyde (0.5 ml), glacial acetic acid (50 ml), and concentrated sulfuric acid (1 ml) is a sensitive means of detecting bile acids in thin-layer chromatography. Quantities as small as 1 μg may be easily detected. The bile acids give characteristic colors with this reagent, thus making identification easier.
