TL;DR
It is a simple fact that many major divisions of behaviour, such as play, grazing and territorialism, require kinetic expression, and gross kinetics can therefore readily be seen as a salient behavioural output which close confinement cannot easily permit.
Abstract
The essence of behaviour is adaptive bodily movement. In the organization of this, mobile displays, patterns of activity and locomotor ways are created, giving the whole animal much of its ethological properties and qualities. Various categories of bodily motility can be recognized, including physiological activities, anatomically localized actions, specific goal-related acts and gross movement of the whole animal such as locomotion. Implemented gross activity is the category on which this discussion rests. Various aspects of gross kinetics are the objects of study which continue to be close to the heart of applied ethology. All the major behavioural divisions such as reproduction, maintenance and association incorporate various kinetic features. Kinetics, even as component units, might be considered, from another point of view, as an ethological domain of its own, in addition to its role as the essential substrate of the major divisions of behaviour, such as those mentioned above. It is a simple fact that many major divisions of behaviour, such as play, grazing and territorialism, require kinetic expression. Gross kinetics can therefore readily be seen as a salient behavioural output which close confinement cannot easily permit.
