Abstract
The Brazilian population is still relatively young, despite the recent fall in the country’s birth rate. However, the UN estimates that the Brazilian age structure in 2050 will be similar to that currently seen in the developed countries. Based on the Brazilian Home Sample Survey (PNAD/IBGE), the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS) and the Brazilian Health Ministry’s estimated public expenditures on health in 1998, the objectives of this paper are: a) to analyze the causes of morbidity, the use of health services, and health expenditures by the population in 1998; and b) to project the growth of the demand for health services and expenditures in Brazil as a consequence of the changes in the Brazilian age structure and the GDP per capita in 2050.
