Gaku, the Japanese word for learning shown here, is the name given in the present article to an “artiilcial student,” whose problem-solving and learning behavior (overt and covert) are determined by a system of programs on a computer. Gaku embodies a research effort directed toward the development of an intelligent learning system which can be taught to handle increasingly complex and varied tasks asthe system gains experience. The research is motivated by the belief that it may eventually lead to better ways of utilizing computer potentiality than are known today.
