Abstract
For women with one prior cesarean delivery, the risk of uterine rupture is higher among those whose labor is induced than among those with repeated cesarean delivery without labor. Labor induced with a prostaglandin confers the highest risk.

New England Journal of MedicineComparison of a Trial of Labor with an Elective Second Cesarean Section
706 Citations1996Michael McMahon, E.R. Luther +2 more
Among pregnant women who have had a cesarean section, major maternal complications are almost twice as likely among those whose deliveries are managed with a trial of labor as among those who undergo an elective second cesAREan section.

Obstetrics and GynecologyElective Repeat Cesarean Delivery Versus Trial of Labor
251 Citations1994Bruce L. Flamm, JANICE R. GOINGS +2 more
Labor after previous cesarean delivery has a 75% success rate, with a risk of uterine rupture of less than 1%, and with careful supervision, trial of labor eliminates the need for a large proportion of repeat cesAREan operations.
American Journal of Obstetrics and GynecologyUterine rupture associated with the use of misoprostol in the gravid patient with a previous cesarean section
243 Citations1999Melanie M. Plaut, Martin L. Schwartz +1 more
Carefully controlled studies of the risks and benefits of misoprostol are necessary before its widespread use in this setting, as it may increase the risk of uterine rupture in the patient with a scarred uterus.
Obstetrics and GynecologyDelivery after previous cesarean: a risk evaluation
229 Citations1999J. C. Rageth
Induction of labor, epidural anesthesia, failure to progress, and abnormal fetal heart rate pattern are all associated with failure of a trial of labor and uterine rupture, which significantly elevates the risks for mother and child in future deliveries.
Obstetrics and GynecologyDisruption of Prior Uterine Incision following Misoprostol for Labor Induction in Women with Previous Cesarean Delivery
211 Citations1998Deborah A. Wing
When misoprostol is used in women with previous cesareans, there is a high frequency of disruption of prior uterine incisions.
American Journal of Obstetrics and GynecologyRate of uterine rupture during a trial of labor in women with one or two prior cesarean deliveries
177 Citations1999Aaron B. Caughey, Thomas Shipp +4 more
Women with a history of either 1 or 2 prior cesarean deliveries who elected to undergo a trial of labor during a 12-year period at the Brigham and Women's Hospital have an almost 5-fold greater risk of uterine rupture.

159 Citations1993Kiyoko M. Parrish, Victoria L. Holt +3 more
Linked birth certificate-hospital abstract files may become an excellent source of data for epidemiologic and health care studies; however, further training of medical record personnel and standardization of coding are needed to improve the quality of computerized data on obstetric events.
Obstetrics and GynecologyVaginal birth after cesarean and uterine rupture rates in California
100 Citations1999Kimberly D. Gregory
Uterine rupture occurs at a low rate in women with and without prior cesarean delivery and among those who attempt VBAC, but risk of rupture is increased among women with prior cedars and among women who attemptVBAC.

48 Citations1997B.L. Stalnaker, James Mäher +4 more
Most of these cases should not have been eligible for compensation in a traditional tort-based system because the applicable standard of care was not breached, and meeting the published standard for perinatal care failed to prevent these devastating neurologic injuries.
PubMedUterine rupture after use of a prostaglandin E2 vaginal insert during vaginal birth after cesarean. A report of two cases.
12 Citations1999K S Raskin, J D Dachauer +2 more
This prostaglandin compound is not exempt from being associated directly or indirectly with uterine rupture and requires informed consent and continuous monitoring.
